Major landslide hits NH-702A in Zunheboto

A major landslide occurred along National Highway 702A at New Colony, Zunheboto, on August 19, causing concern among residents and disrupting vehicular movement along the important highway stretch.

According to information available, three houses located in the vicinity of the landslide had been evacuated beforehand as a precautionary measure. The houses were later completely damaged by the landslide. The timely evacuation helped prevent any loss of life or injury to the residents.

However, one building in the surrounding area has reportedly developed visible cracks following the landslide, raising concerns over the safety and stability of structures in the affected vicinity.

The landslide resulted in a substantial movement of earth and debris onto the highway, affecting normal vehicular movement along the NH-702A stretch. The incident has also heightened concerns among residents living near the affected area, particularly amid the possibility of further soil movement.

Authorities and concerned departments are assessing the situation and taking necessary measures to ensure public safety and restore safe movement along the highway. Residents in vulnerable locations have also been advised to remain alert and exercise caution, particularly in areas showing signs of ground movement or structural damage.

As of the filing of this report, no loss of life has been reported in connection with the landslide. Further assessment of the damage to buildings, road infrastructure and surrounding areas is expected as officials continue to monitor the situation

Relief packages distributed

Meanwhile, Deputy Commissioner, Zunheboto, Dharam Raj (IAS), distributed relief packages from the Indian Red Cross Society to families affected by the major landslide at New Colony NH- 702A, Zunheboto on August 19.

The relief assistance was provided to support the affected families following the landslide, which occurred along the National Highway. The Deputy Commissioner interacted with the affected families and assured them of necessary assistance and support from the district administration. The relief distribution was carried out as part of the immediate response to the situation and to provide essential assistance to those affected by the landslide.
