Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday highlighted the inspiring success story of Vesalu Puro, a flower grower from Phek district of Nagaland, during the 137th episode of his monthly radio programme Mann Ki Baat.
Sharing examples of individuals who have transformed their lives through innovation, hard work and proper guidance, Modi said Puro’s journey demonstrated how a small hobby can open the door to significant economic opportunities.
According to the Prime Minister, Puro grew up in a farming family and developed a deep interest in flowers from childhood. In 2021, she began cultivating flowers on a small scale, initially driven by her passion.
Over time, she recognised the growing demand for flowers for weddings, festivals and other occasions and decided to turn her hobby into a livelihood opportunity. She subsequently received training in scientific flower cultivation from the local Krishi Vigyan Kendra.
Armed with the technical knowledge, Puro planted thousands of gladiolus bulbs on just a quarter-acre of land. Her first attempt yielded more than 5,000 flowers, marking a significant turning point in her journey.
“Her success marked a new beginning,” Modi said, noting that Puro subsequently expanded her flower cultivation activities.
The Prime Minister pointed out that flowers which were once confined largely to local markets are now being transported from Nagaland to major cities, including Delhi and Mumbai.

Highlighting her achievement as an example of rural entrepreneurship, Modi said Vesalu Puro’s journey showed that when passion is combined with hard work and proper guidance, it can create new possibilities.
The Prime Minister also urged people to recognise and share stories of individuals who are bringing about meaningful changes in society through small but impactful initiatives.
“Sometimes a small hobby opens the door to great possibilities in life,” Modi said while introducing Puro’s story to listeners across the country.
Puro’s recognition in Mann Ki Baat has also brought national attention to the potential of floriculture in Nagaland, particularly as an alternative and commercially viable avenue for farmers and rural youth.
