Nagaland University holds financial literacy session with SEBI, NSE

The Department of Rural Development and Planning, Nagaland University, Medziphema Campus, organised an interactive awareness session on navigating financial markets, focusing on awareness, inclusion and fraud prevention, in collaboration with the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) and the National Stock Exchange (NSE) India Limited.

The programme aimed to promote financial literacy, improve understanding of securities markets, encourage informed investment decisions and sensitise participants to financial scams and fraudulent investment practices.

The session began with a welcome address by Prof Jayanta Choudhury, Head of the Department of Rural Development and Planning, who welcomed representatives of SEBI and NSE and highlighted the importance of financial awareness in empowering students and the wider community. He emphasised that financial literacy was an essential life skill, particularly for young people increasingly exposed to digital financial services and investment opportunities.

Prof Dipak Sinha, Pro-Vice-Chancellor of Nagaland University, Medziphema Campus, delivered the address, underlining the role of financial education in promoting responsible investment behaviour and improving awareness of the opportunities and risks associated with financial markets.

The technical session on the securities market was conducted by Akshay Kumar Singh, Assistant General Manager, SEBI, Kolkata. He provided an overview of the functioning of the securities market and highlighted the importance of investor awareness in making informed financial decisions.

This was followed by a session on scams and fraud prevention by Abhishek Singh, Manager, NSE, Kolkata. The session focused on identifying fraudulent investment schemes, exercising caution when responding to investment offers and adopting safe practices while participating in financial markets.

An interactive question-and-answer session allowed participants to engage with the resource persons and seek clarification on securities markets, investment awareness and fraud prevention. The discussion reinforced the need to verify investment-related information, understand financial risks and rely on credible sources before making investment decisions.

The programme concluded with a vote of thanks by Varun Singh, Deputy Manager, NSE, Kolkata, who expressed appreciation to the university administration, representatives of SEBI and NSE, and participants for contributing to the successful conduct of the session.
