10 Manipur Political Parties urge Governor to save democracy in State

Imphal: Parties points out that no meaningful peace talks with concerned stakeholders is in sight even after five months

Ten like-minded political parties in Manipur submitted a memorandum to the Governor of Manipur Anusuiya Uikey on Friday urging for “peace and tranquillity, to save democracy, to provide adequate relief and rehabilitation to the people affected by the Crisis in Manipur.”

The parties included Congress, Janata Dal (United), Communist Party of India, Communist Party of India (Marxist), All India Trinamool Congress, Aam Aadmi Party, All India Forward Bloc. Nationalist Congress Party, Shiv Sena (UBT) and Revolutionary Socialist Party.

In the memorandum, the parties stated that since 3rd May 2023, over 175 lives had been lost, more than 2000 people injured, 5000 houses gutted and over 60,000 displaced. Moreover, several places of worship of various faiths had been burnt down.

The Opposition claimed that due to the failure of the State and central machineries, local civil societies formed by many sections of the society are trying to fill the gap of missing governance by resorting to various forms of agitations and pronouncements. It said that the State Government has curbed the fundamental rights of the people like freedom of speech, freedom of assembly, constructive criticism of the government, etc which is against the Constitution and democratic norms.

It also accused the Central and State governments and vigilante groups of creating panic amonst the people and urged that such restrictions should be lifted immediately.

The Opposition parties also pointed out that no meaningful peace talks with the concerned stakeholders is in sight even after five months. “It is high time for the Central and state authorities to engage in peace process to bring normalcy to the state,” it said

Further, the parties stressed that there is a need for a fresh look at the requirement of relief and rehabilitation of people affected by the crisis stating that the relief package announce by the state and central governments was inadequate.

It also highlighted that the mortal remains of two students, Hijam Linthoingambi and Phijam Hemanjit Singh are yet to be recovered and handed over to the families. Similarly, several mortal remains of many killed due to the violence are lying in the mortuaries at RIMS, INIMS, Churachandpur District Hospital, etc. It is the wish and desire of family members of the deceased to perform the last rites according to their faith. We would request you to arrange for handing over of mortal remains at the earliest, it stated.

In the memorandum, the parties also expressed their readiness to extend full support to efforts of the governments in resolving the complex issues in the Manipur.

Earlier, on their way to see the Governor to submit the memorandum, the political parties were stopped by Manipur Police.
