The 66th annual Kohima Village Sports Association (KVSA) Meet kicked off today at the Kewhimia Ground in a spectacular ceremony with Abu Metha, Vice President of the Athletics Federation of India, Advisor to the Chief Minister of Nagaland, and Chairman of IDAN, gracing the event as the Chief Guest.
In his address, Metha emphasized the importance of forward-thinking and encouraged the gathering to look towards the future while also cherishing the history that shapes us. Metha lauded the citizens of Kohima for their significant contributions, acknowledging the village’s role in nurturing remarkable individuals who have propelled the journey and adventures of the Naga people. “As we set our sights on the future, it’s crucial to maintain the drive and determination for the greater good of the Naga people and the nation as a whole,” he remarked.
Expressing optimism for the younger generation, Metha emphasized that this period belongs to them, expressing hope that they will rise as leaders in the era of Asia’s ascendancy. He also hoped that the youth will play a significant role not only in the fate of the state, but also in shaping the destiny of humanity at large.
The sportsmen present today serve as symbols of unity, viewed Metha, highlighting the universal power of sports to unite and transcend language barriers. He encouraged everyone to pursue their dreams and ambitions, noting that the Indian sports industry is projected to reach a value of $500 billion in the next five years. Metha expressed optimism about the potential success of Indian athletes in various championships and games, as he exuded hope for champions to emerge from the talented players present at the event.
Acknowledging the leadership of the Chief Minister of Nagaland, Neiphiu Rio, Metha pointed out that renewed efforts are underway to enhance sports infrastructure and ecosystems. This initiative includes organizing more events and conducting coaching sessions with the aim of supporting young athletes to realize their potential.

Briefing the gathering on the formation of KVSA and its focus on sport, Helevio Solo, Chairman of Kohima village, noted that the Kohima Village Sport was established in 1945 with a primary focus on wrestling, but has since expanded to include a variety of sports and training practices. Solo expressed delight at the fact that athletes from the village are now competing at the national level, showcasing their talent and skills. The primary objective of KVSA is to promote unity, understanding, and harmony within the village.
Solo also acknowledged the evolving nature of sports as an industry for earning a livelihood and urged the youth to pursue their strengths and strive for excellence, with the goal of representing the state and eventually India in the future. Vituonyü Khezhie, the President of KVYO, emphasized that the significance of the sports event is not only in the athletic activities, but also in the broader aim of fostering understanding and cultivating friendships
Approximately 600 athletes and thousands of spectators gathered at the ground to witness the most awaited annual sports event, with families and friends enjoying their packed food and flasks filled with tea.
The event began with Menuosetuo Yiese lighting the KVSA torch. The invocation was pronounced by Rev. Vichülie Kelio, Christian Revival Church Kohima and presentation of the Kewhimia theme song.
