Delhi Chief Minister and National Convenor of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), Arvind Kejriwal has said that he will be stepping down from the post of chief minister after two days. Kejriwal made the announcement today at the AAP headquarter in New Delhi while addressing the party workers after his release from jail on 13th September 2024.
“Today I have come to ask the public whether you consider Kejriwal honest or a criminal. Now until the people of Delhi announce their decision, I will not sit on the CM’s chair. I will resign from the post of Chief Minister two days from today”, Kejriwal said. He added that if the people think he is an honest man, they will vote for him in large numbers in the Delhi elections in February 2025.
Stating that he will sit on the Chief Minister’s chair only after being elected, Kejriwal also demanded that the elections be held in Delhi along with Maharashtra elections in November 2024. He also informed that there will be a meeting of MLAs in the next 2-3 days, in which the next CM will be decided.
The AAP leader said that he did not resign when he was jailed because he wanted to save democracy. “If I had resigned from jail, they would have put all the opposition chief ministers in jail and toppled the government,” he said and requested all chief ministers of the opposition not to resign even if they are put in jail “because we have shown that a government can be run from jail.”
Further, he claimed that the BJP thought that by sending him to jail, they would break the AAP and topple the government in Delhi and Punjab but the AAP is fighting against their conspiracies and the BJP has boosted his spirits even more.
Meanwhile, the BJP has said that Arvind Kejriwal has become the first Chief Minister of the country who is banned by the Supreme Court from going to office, signing files, and giving statement on the PMLA case for which he was jailed. It questioned why Kejriwal needs 48 hours instead of resigning immediately. It has also alleged that the Delhi Chief Minister needs those two days to transfer assets.
Further, the BJP has said that Kejriwal’s decision to step down means that he has accepted the allegations against him.
