In a cozy corner of Mokokchung town, where the aroma of freshly brewed coffee mingles with the warmth of good company, stands Top Floor Café, a labor of love built by Alemkaba Jamir and Kirensungla Pongen.
Alem and Kiren’s story began in 2015, like many modern romances—through text messages and casual meetings that soon blossomed into something deeper. Their relationship grew over time, and so did their shared dream of running a business together.
Before tying the knot, they envisioned creating a space where people could gather, relax, and enjoy great food. “Since my wife is a fantastic cook, we thought of opening a café,” Alem shared. “It has been our dream, and that’s how we reached this point today.”
The Challenges & Joys of Working as a Couple
Running a business as a couple is no easy feat, especially when personal and professional lives intertwine. Alem, who is actively engaged in social work and meetings, acknowledges that much of the daily operations rest on Kiren’s capable shoulders.
“There are challenges, of course,” Alem admitted. “We’ve had small misunderstandings here and there, but we always resolve them as mature individuals. Now, with a little boy in our lives, balancing work and family has become even more demanding. But so far, we’re managing well, adjusting our time accordingly—wherever the wind blows,” he laughed.
Despite the challenges, their love continues to thrive within the walls of their café. While Alem insists he isn’t the romantic type, he cherishes the evenings when they cook for each other and enjoy quiet dinners at the café.
More than just a business, Top Floor Café is a reflection of the couple’s hard work, care, and affection. “We’ve put our hearts into this place,” Alem said. “From our special cuisine to our commitment to quality and customer service, we prioritize giving our best.”
Over the years, the café has become a favorite among locals. Though they don’t have any Valentine’s Day specials planned this year, Alem hinted, “Life is full of surprises—couples can still drop by and make it special.”

A Romantic Dish & A Story Behind It
Among their many offerings, one dish holds a special place in Alem’s heart: the Top Floor Special Fried Rice with Beef Chilli. “One day, my wife specially made this for me, and it was just wow,” he recalled. “So, we thought, why not add it to the menu? Ever since, customers have loved it.”
For Kiren, Garlic Fried Rice with Hot Wings is her go-to meal. Their love for food, much like their relationship, is built on a foundation of care and shared experiences.
The journey of Top Floor Café hasn’t always been smooth. One of the biggest setbacks came when their kitchen burned down to ashes, resulting in a significant loss. “It was a tough time,” Alem recalled. “But by God’s grace and the support of our customers, we recovered after a few years of struggle.”
Today, the biggest challenge they face is competition. “Mokokchung has a growing number of good restaurants and cafés, but the town’s population isn’t that big. To survive, we must constantly innovate and give our best.”
Alem believes that entrepreneurs in Mokokchung need more support from society, agencies, and the government. “If there were measures to uplift small businesses, it would help many of us.”
The Key to Success: Understanding Customers
For Alem and Kiren, customer satisfaction is paramount. “We take customer compliments seriously, ask for reviews, and implement changes based on feedback,” Alem said. They also observe how other cafés operate, learning and adapting in a healthy, competitive way.
Their advice to aspiring entrepreneurs? “Don’t start a business just because others are doing it. Find what you’re good at or passionate about, and then apply it. Only then will you be successful.”
Top Floor Café has become more than just a dining spot—it’s a place where love stories unfold. “We have a cozy interior with a romantic corner, making it an ideal space for couples. Though I haven’t seen any proposals yet, I’m hoping to witness one soon,” Alem smiled.
From first dates to quiet moments shared over a cup of coffee, the café is a silent witness to many love stories in Mokokchung. “We strive to create an inviting atmosphere, not just for couples but also for families,” he added.
Looking Ahead: Future Dreams & Expansions
Despite the daily challenges, Alem and Kiren have big dreams for their café. “I see Top Floor Café becoming one of the best in Nagaland,” Alem said. “If God wills, I dream of expanding it all over the state. And who knows? Maybe one day, we’ll be recognized as one of the most successful entrepreneur couples.”
They also hope to host special events for couples in the future, possibly taking customer suggestions into account.
At the heart of Top Floor Café is a love built on understanding, respect, and shared dreams. Alem defines love as “understanding each other, caring, sharing opinions, and respecting differences.”
