Cyclone Sitrang creates havoc in villages in Kiphire district

Several houses were damaged as strong wind and rain battered the village of Phisami in Kiphire district in the early hours of Tuesday morning. A government school and a house belonging to a family of 10 were among those worst affected by the storm.

The lower section of the Government High School, which is said to had been built by the villages following a fire incident in 2018, was completely removed by the wind brought by cyclone Sitrang that made a landfall in Bangladesh on Monday night.

The storm has also rendered a family of ten homeless as the roof of their (kaccha) house destroyed by the storm. The family consists of husband and wife and their eight children.

According to sources the strong wind accompanied by rain lashed the area for about three hours destroying around 15 houses in Phisami village. No loss of human and livestock lives have been reported so far, sources said.

The village authorities have reported the incident to the concern government departments for early intervention and relief.

Moasünep, Extra Assistant Commissioner (EAC), Seyochung, in a swift action, visited Phisama village and verified the damages. He told Nagaland Tribune that he will be forwarding a letter to the department of disaster management for release of immediate relief for the affected victims.

Further, there has been a report of heavy rain and strong winds at Hakkomute village under Pungro sub-division, Kiphire district. According to sources, the storm assaulted the village in the Indo-Myanmar border causing damages to around eleven buildings, including a government school and several private houses.

The destructive weather condition is an effect of the cyclonic storm Sitrang which is now passing through the north east of India after it made a landfall in Bangladesh.

The Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA) and home department hadon 23 October issued a warning that the state will be experiencing heavy to extremely heavy rainfalls at most places due to the cyclone.
