The Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA), Home Department, has issued a weather advisory warning of moderate to heavy rainfall with thunderstorms across most districts of the state between August 16 and 19.

According to the forecast, on August 16, heavy rains and thunderstorms are expected in Kiphire, Phek, Zunheboto, Tuensang, Mokokchung, and Kohima districts. On August 17, Chümoukedima, Dimapur, Longleng, Niuland, and Kiphire are likely to experience heavy rain, while the remaining districts will see light to moderate showers that may intensify during the period.

The NSDMA cautioned that lightning strikes and high winds could disrupt communication and connectivity, urging the public to take preventive measures. The agency also warned that lowland and foothill districts, including Dimapur, Niuland, Chümoukedima, Bhandari, Baghty, Tizit, and Tuli, face heightened risk of waterlogging and flash floods due to heavy precipitation in the hill sectors.

Precautionary measures advised:

– Keep valuable documents and items in a safe, secure place.

– Evacuate low-lying areas if instructed by authorities.

– Stay alert for potential gas leaks.

– Avoid consuming food that has come into contact with floodwater.

–  Do not enter or drive through flooded areas.

– Disconnect and move electrical appliances above ground level.

– Boil drinking water or use chlorinated water.

– Watch out for open drain holes or flood channels.

The NSDMA has urged the public to exercise caution and called on all District Disaster Management Authorities and related departments to remain on high alert to safeguard lives and property during the monsoon season.

For emergencies, citizens can contact the State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC) via toll-free number 1070.
