The Tikhir community celebrated the Tsonglak-nyi Festival under the theme “Pojü vila peinü mütsin vi-ei” meaning “Live Culturally by Tradition” at Kiusam Town from October 9 to 12, with the main celebration held on October 10.
Speaking on the theme, Rev Fr Thomas Toretkiu said that to “live culturally by tradition” means embracing and practicing one’s heritage, values, beliefs, and customs.
He emphasized the importance of passing down the community’s legacy to younger generations — including traditional dance, music, art, and cultural expressions — as these form the essence of identity and belonging.
“Our culture is our identity,” he said, urging the people to uphold good values that sanctify, purify, and cultivate humility before God. He reminded that the festival serves as a time for renewal, introspection, and strengthening of relationships within the community and with others.
Fr Toretkiu highlighted that the Tikhir tradition of sharing food and caring for neighbours reflects the community’s spirit of generosity, discipline, hard work, and peace-loving nature — blessings that define their way of life. He cautioned that if traditions like Tsonglak-nyi are not shared with the younger generation, the community risks losing its identity. He, therefore, urged elders to teach and preserve their rich cultural heritage.
