The Department of Political Science of MGM College successfully organized a seminar to observe National Voters’ Day on January 23 at the College Auditorium.
National Voters’ Day is celebrated every year on January 25 to commemorate the foundation of the Election Commission of India, established on January 25, 1950. The day serves as a powerful reminder of the significance of voting in a democratic nation and aims to strengthen the participation of citizens, especially the youth, in the electoral process.
On this occasion, Kailang Phon, Assistant Professor, Department of Political Science, delivered an insightful and informative lecture highlighting the history, significance, and objectives of National Voters’ Day. He elaborated on why the day is celebrated in India, the importance of voting in a democracy, and the need to create awareness among citizens, especially young voters.
Phon emphasized that the primary objective of celebrating National Voters’ Day is to instill a sense of responsibility among staff and students to participate actively in the electoral process and thereby strengthen democratic values. He encouraged students to exercise their fundamental right to vote and become responsible and informed citizens of the nation.

The programme aimed not only at motivating students to participate in elections but also at reinforcing the idea that voting is both a right and a duty in a democratic system. A total of 50 students and 3 faculty members from the Department of Political Science actively participated in the seminar. At the conclusion of the programme, all students and faculty members took the Voters’ Pledge, which was led by Poiwang Konyak, Assistant Professor, Department of Political Science, reaffirming their commitment to uphold democratic values and participate responsibly in the electoral process.
