An unethical temporary solution to an inevitable problem of unemployment: SSUD on arbitrary appointment of Asst. Professors

The Sangtam Students’ Union Dimapur (SSUD) has expressed solidarity to the Dimapur Nagaland Students’ Union (DNSU) regarding the arbitrary appointment of Asst. Professors in the Higher Education Department.

“The union is against such practice of appointments being made where NPSC, the main governing body is being bypassed to recruit candidates. If such appointments are deemed valid by the government, then the very existence of NPSC is also irrelevant for our government. If such contractual appointees were to be made regular, than there should have been an exam conducted through NPSC in the first place,” stated the SSUD.

The Union highlighted the 2018 UGC regulations, clause 13.1 which states that teachers should be appointed on a contract basis only when it is absolutely necessary and when the student-teacher ratio does not justify a full-time appointment. With such appointments deemed temporary, the SSUD noted, should not lead to claims for regularization.

The draft of UGC Regulations 2025 though made several changes but do not alter the fundamental requirement that regular appointments must be made through a proper selection process and that is NPSC for the state of Nagaland.

“Such steps violate the constitutional requirement of fair recruitment which is guarantee by Article 14 ‘Right to Equality’ and & Article 16 ‘Equality of opportunity in Public Employment’ of the constitution of India. With the rise of educated unemployed youths every year and shortage of post in public sectors to accommodate everyone, such steps by the government does not help ease the struggles but disgruntles the job seeking educated youths,” asserted the Union.

It also expressed that the move creates a sense of division between the two sections of people who are seeking a secure government jobs, indication an  unhealthy sign for any society.

“Encouraging and supporting such steps may seem reasonable but are actually an unethical temporary solution to an inevitable problem of unemployment,” viewed the SSUD. Therefore, the Union urged all the individuals, especially the elders and students to stand for what is right and morally correct.

“To the elders, to stand and raise their voice to correct the wrong that has been done in the past and to the students, to raise their voice to prevent the wrong to happen in the future. We seek a proper and a just path in solving this matter at the earliest without delay,” added the Union.
