The Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) Mangkolemba, has written to the Advisor

Fire & Emergency Services, Home Guard & Civil Defence Government of Nagaland S.Kiusumew Yimchunger appealing for the establishment of a Fire and Emergency Services station in Mangkolemba sub-division, Mokokchung district.

“This request stems from the pressing need to ensure the safety and security of life and property in our area, which has been severely neglected in this critical aspect,”stated the group.

In the letter, the group also outlined reasons and justifications for its request:

“1.       Geographical and Logistical Challenges:

Although Mangkolemba is one of the oldest sub-divisions under Mokokchung district, it is located approximately 65 kilometres away from the district headquarters. The deplorable condition of the roads connecting Mangkolemba to Mokokchung further exacerbates the challenges of accessibility. The roads to Mangkolemba are in a dire state, making timely response to emergencies nearly impossible.

  1. Distance from Existing F&ES Station:

The nearest Fire and Emergency Services station is situated at Mokokchung. In the event of a fire, the response time from Mokokchung to Mangkolemba is alarmingly long. By the time fire brigades arrive via these unmaintained roads, the damage is already done, reducing the response to merely documenting the aftermath rather than preventing it. It is clear that without a local F&ES station, we cannot hope to mitigate fire emergencies effectively.

  1. Significance of Mangkolemba Subdivision:

Mangkolemba sub-division comprises three major ranges—Tzurangkong, Japukong, and Jangpetkong—out of the six ranges in Mokokchung district. Despite its considerable size and population, the subdivision has been overlooked in terms of infrastructure and emergency services. The absence of a fire station in such a significant area reflects neglect and alienates the residents, leaving them vulnerable during emergencies.

  1. Frequent Fire Incidents:

Over the years, Mangkolemba has witnessed numerous fire incidents. In this year alone, two major incidents were reported, resulting in houses being completely razed to ashes. While, by God’s grace, no human lives have been lost so far, the loss of property and materials has been substantial. With each incident, the community’s fears grow—how long before these fires claim lives? The lack of an accessible fire station puts everyone at risk.

  1. Community Appeal for Justice:

The people of Mangkolemba sub-division have shown remarkable patience despite the neglect. However, this issue cannot be ignored any longer. Ensuring the safety of the sub-division’s residents is a fundamental right that must be upheld.”

“Establishing a fire station is not a privilege but a necessity for our community,” stated the CSOs requesting for the Government’s urgent intervention in addressing the critical issue.

It expressed optimism that establishing a Fire and Emergency Services station in Mangkolemba will greatly enhance the safety and security of our people and property, and further reflect the Government’s commitment to equitable development and welfare across all regions of Nagaland.

“We trust in your understanding and hope for a favourable response to this long-overdue demand. Please consider this representation as a collective voice of the people of Mangkolemba subdivision, who look forward to your support and action,” added the CSOs.
