DC Dimapur calls on youth to act as ambassadors of democracy by spreading awareness about voting

The 15th National Voters Day was celebrated at the DC’s Conference Hall in Dimapur on 25th January, 2025 under the theme “Nothing Like Voting, I Vote for Sure.”

The event was chaired by Zakabo V. Rotokha, Additional Deputy Commissioner, Dimapur, who also delivered the welcome speech. Zakabo V. Rotokha addressing the gathering welcomed everyone. He highlighted that voting is not just a fundamental right but a responsibility that allows individuals to shape the future of their community and nation. He also encouraged all voters to make their voices heard and take pride in contributing to a brighter and stronger future through their participation. He expressed gratitude to the attendees for their commitment to democracy.

The celebration featured the felicitation of winners from the Essay and Painting Competitions conducted in its honor. Imsujungla from St. John College secured the 1st position in the Essay Competition, followed by Priyanka Dey (Pranab College) and Alice Awomi (Unity College) in the 2nd and 3rd positions, respectively. In the Painting Competition, Mhayan Lotha of Unity College bagged the 1st position, with Seema Biswas (Pranab College) and Naiba M. Konyak (Unity College) securing 2nd and 3rd places.

Additionally, the event recognized the efforts of the Best Booth Level Officers (BLOs) for 2025. The awardees included Khekho Sema (Sematilla, Dimapur I AC), L. Talitemjen (Imkonglenden/Circuit House Colony, Dimapur II AC), and P. Akhu Kath (Purana Bazar B, Dimapur III AC).

Dr. Tinojongshi Chang, NCS, Deputy Commissioner and District Election Officer, Dimapur, administered the Voter’s Pledge and delivered a speech emphasizing the need for active electoral participation and the power of every vote.

In his address, Chang congratulated the award recipients and winners of various competitions organized as part of the celebration. He also extended his congratulations to the newly registered young voters, emphasizing their crucial role in strengthening democracy.

Highlighting India’s status as the largest democracy in the world, Chang shared that 99 crore voters are currently registered, with the possibility of reaching the 1 billion mark this year. He encouraged young voters to actively participate in the democratic process and take their voting rights seriously, stressing the importance of electing capable and committed representatives. Chang also called on the youth to act as ambassadors of democracy by spreading awareness among their peers, urging those who have turned 18 but are yet to register as voters to do so. “Each vote counts,” he said, “and together we can ensure a vibrant and strong democracy.”

He lauded the efforts of election officials in maintaining the electoral roll but noted the need to address issues such as double entries, incorrect spellings, and outdated voter information. He urged the officials to continue working diligently to clean up the voter rolls, ensuring a fair and transparent electoral process. Chang reminded everyone that a clean voter roll and genuine voter participation are key to strengthening the credibility of elections.

Chang also administered the voters’ day pledge to uphold the democratic spirit and ensure every vote counts.

Earlier the program commenced with the display of a message from the Chief Election Commissioner, Rajiv Kumar.

The program concluded with a vote of thanks by Toshimongba Longchar, Assistant Election Officer, Dimapur, who expressed appreciation to all dignitaries, officials, and participants for their support and contributions. He extended special thanks to the organizing team and encouraged everyone to continue promoting voter awareness.
