Member of Parliament, Lok Sabha, S Supongmeren Jamir has welcomed the Government of India’s decision to recognise 19 notified tribal local languages and dialects of Nagaland in the recruitment process of Gramin Dak Sevaks (GDS) under the Department of Posts, describing it as a historic step towards safeguarding the linguistic and cultural identity of the Naga people.
In a statement, Jamir expressed gratitude to the Home Department, Government of Nagaland, MLA Dr Tseilhoutuo Rhutso, Chief Secretary Nagaland, Sentiyanger and Director Postal Services Kohima, Dr Alice K Vizo, for their collective efforts and support in successfully pursuing the recruitment policy reform.
Jamir stated that while GDS recruitment was previously open on a broader all-India basis, this initiative has ensured that the recruitment process in Nagaland would now duly recognize and incorporate the notified tribal languages of the State, thereby safeguarding the interests and opportunities of the indigenous people of Nagaland.

Calling the move a major recognition of the linguistic and cultural heritage of the Naga people, Jamir said the decision would promote inclusivity, representation, and wider participation of Nagaland’s youth in the GDS recruitment system.
He also welcomed the Office Memorandum issued by the Department of Posts on May 21, 2026, which officially recognizes proficiency and knowledge of notified tribal local languages and dialects for GDS engagement in Nagaland.
Jamir further expressed hope that similar initiatives would continue in the future to strengthen the protection, preservation, and promotion of indigenous tribal languages and cultural heritage across the state.
