The International Day of Non-Violence is celebrated annually on October 2 to commemorate Mahatma Gandhi as a global beacon of peace and non-violence. This day is also marked by his birth anniversary. The United Nations proclaimed to honor this day since 2007 in recognition of his contribution of non-violence and its’ significance in shaping societies.
Mahatma Gandhi‘s famous quote, “Non-violence is the greatest force at the disposal of mankind. It is mightier than the mightiest weapon of destruction,” has resonated with many sections of the world which also included Martin Luther King Jr.’s fight for civil rights in the United States to Nelson Mandela’s struggle against apartheid in South Africa. His ideas influenced countless leaders and movements, underscoring the universal appeal of non-violence as a powerful instrument of resistance and reform, states the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting, PIB.
The principles of non-violence that Gandhi lived through during his lifetime serves as a reminder for the present generation that peace can remove the growing conflicts and inequality and calls for a roadmap to peaceful solutions to address social issues.
Additionally, Gandhi’s values of simplicity, conservation, and self-reliance are reflected in India’s initiatives like the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan (Clean India Campaign), which promotes cleanliness and environmental sustainability, states the Ministry.
