The department of Legal Metrology and Consumer Protection (LMCP) organised an awareness programme on consumer rights on Monday at the VDB Hall in Wokha. The event aimed to educate citizens about their rights and responsibilities as consumers in the face of rising trade risks and scams in a rapidly developing world.

Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) Wokha Renbomo Ezung commended the department for organising the programme. He emphasised the significance of consumer rights, drawing attention to common violations such as manipulation of expiry dates, charging above maximum retail price (MRP), and lack of proper price tagging.

The official encouraged consumers to demand receipts as proof of purchase, especially for returns and exchanges, and advised citizens to put their knowledge into practice rather than merely being aware of it.

Member of the District Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum, Surenthung Enny addressed the gathering as an expert on the topic. He advised consumers to thoroughly check products before purchasing and report any malpractices to the appropriate department or consumer rights NGOs. He emphasised that consumer rights apply not only in commercial transactions but also in government schemes and electricity billing.

Enny explained that the rights cover both goods and services, and consumers are entitled to redress under the law. While noting a growing awareness of consumer rights in Wokha, he however added that many are still hesitant to file complaints. He encouraged local leaders to spearhead awareness efforts and assured that complaints related to scams from other districts can also be filed locally.

He also warned against illegal practices like scraping off MRP on motor vehicles and called for removal of misleading signs in shops stating “no return, no exchange,” citing Section 14 of the Consumer Protection Act which grants customers the right to return and refunds.

Assistant Controller LMCP Wokha, T Aimong highlighted the need for consumer awareness, stating that many citizens unknowingly fall victim to unethical trade practices. He stressed on the importance of the Consumer Protection Act, 2019, calling it the foundational framework for ethical trade and commerce. The Act not only outlines consumer rights but also emphasises individual responsibilities in ensuring fair practices.

The official further informed that the programme included participants from various backgrounds such as students and community leaders, with the intention of spreading awareness across different sections of society. He urged upon all citizens to take active responsibility in practising their rights, expressing hope that Wokha would one day be fully informed and empowered in consumer matters.

The programme concluded with an interactive session, allowing participants to clarify doubts and share their experiences, further reinforcing the message of proactive and informed consumer behaviour.
