Maha Kumbh stampede: PM Modi condoles loss of lives

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed sadness over the stampede incident that took place at the ongoing Maha Khumb in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh. The UP Government has not yet given an official confirmation on the number of deceased and injured, however, various media houses are reporting that at least 15 devotees were killed in the incident that occurred around 1:00 am on Wednesday.

In a post on X platform, PM Modi offered “deepest condolences to the devotees who have lost their loved ones in this.” He also wished all injured a speedy recovery.

Further, the Prime Minister said that the local administration is engaged in helping the victims in every possible way and informed that he was constantly in touch with the state government and had spoken to UP Chief Minister Adityanath Yogi.

Earlier, Yogi had urged devotees to take bath in the ghat nearest to them and not try to go towards the Sangam Nose. The Chief Minister also reminded them to follow the instructions of the administration and cooperate in making arrangements.

“People are bathing peacefully at all the ghats of Sangam. Do not pay any attention to any rumours,” he added.

The President of India, Droupadi Murmu expressed sadness over the stampede incident and offered condolences to the families of the injured devotees.

The 45-day-long Maha Kumbh 2025 commenced on January 13, 2025 in Prayagraj. Over 45 crore of devotees from across the globe are expected to gather at the Sangam—the sacred confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna, and Saraswati rivers— to partake in the holy dip of this monumental event that happens once in every 144 years.
