Monsoon havoc across Nagaland: Landslides, road blockades, and property damage reported

Nagaland is witnessing the harsh impact of the monsoon season as extreme weather conditions have begun wreaking havoc across the State. The Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA), under the Home Department, has received multiple reports of damages caused by heavy rainfall, landslides, and windstorms, affecting infrastructure, homes, and agricultural land in several districts.

According to a report issued by Commissioner & Secretary to the Government of Nagaland, Lhouchalie Viya, IAS, in the state capital, Kohima, a major land sinking incident has been reported near the Kisama Heritage Village. Additionally, a landslide disrupted the road between Kigwema, Mima, and Chakhabama, while a retaining wall collapsed at Phesama village, posing a threat to nearby residents.

In Tuensang district, a landslide was reported at Phingjang Ward in Tuensang town, and the Tobu road below Tuensang Village was blocked. An Anganwadi Centre at Phir Ahir village under Longkhim sub-division was damaged due to a windstorm.

Kiphire district has been severely affected with multiple landslides and road blockages reported between Khongjiri and Mimi villages, and also between 02 Junction and Pungro Town. Landslide incidents were also recorded at Singrep village, while agricultural fields were damaged in Moya and Pungro villages.

In Meluri district, a landslide damaged the Village Guard (VG) office guard room, and overflowing of the Araju River damaged paddy fields in Reguri Village. A collapsed retaining wall in Wutsi Colony also impacted a residential house.

Noklak district has reported extensive road blockages across multiple routes including Noklak–Chingmei–Tuensang, Noklak–Pangsha, and Panso–Kusong–Tuensang roads. These disruptions are affecting connectivity and access to remote areas.

Shamator district suffered crop damage as maize fields in Chassir Village were destroyed by windstorms and rains, while a major landslide occurred between Shamator and Kiphire road.

In Mokokchung, a collapsed retaining wall caused damage to a residential house in Mongsenbai Ward, and in Luyong Ward under Mangkolemba sub-division, another wall collapse affected a footpath and three houses.

Wokha district faced power outages after a cyclonic windstorm uprooted several electric poles. A landslide at the Tribal Circuit in Doyang also affected the office reception and cafeteria buildings.

In Zunheboto, a landslide incident was reported from Atoizu sub-division, while Peren district reported road blockages between Vamsi Akilesh and New Ngaulong.

The NSDMA has issued a public advisory urging all District Disaster Management Authorities (DDMAs) to remain on high alert and to take proactive steps to safeguard lives and properties. The public is also advised to stay away from vulnerable areas, including landslide-prone zones and riverbanks, during the monsoon season.
