After years of neglect and mounting inconvenience to commuters, the crucial road stretch from Mother Church to Don Bosco Higher Secondary School (DBHSS) connecting various colonies in Wokha is set to be repaired.

The road, considered a vital link within Wokha town, connects several colonies, institutions and administrative offices while serving as a major route for students, churchgoers, office workers and daily commuters. Residents said its deteriorating condition has remained a long-standing concern, particularly during heavy usage and public gatherings.

Likya Colony Chairman, Ajamo Kikon described the stretch as one of the most important road junctions in the district, noting that its significance extends far beyond a single locality.

“This road is used by many colonies and serves as a key connecting point in the town,” he said, adding that the route provides access to Mother Church (Wokha Town Baptist Church) and links with the national highway from both directions.

According to him, one section of the road of Mother Church leads uphill towards the Superintendent of Police office and the upcoming Deputy Commissioner’s office, while another route connects New Colony, DBHSS, Wokha Village and several surrounding colonies.

Expressing relief over the proposed repair, Kikon said residents had struggled for years due to the poor condition of the road and hoped the initiative would finally address the difficulties faced by commuters. At the same time, he stressed the importance of community participation in preserving public infrastructure.

He urged residents to refrain from dumping waste into roadside drains, warning that clogged drainage systems often lead to water overflow, which damages roads over time. Calling for greater civic responsibility, Kikon appealed to citizens to cooperate with developmental initiatives undertaken for the welfare of society.

Meanwhile, former Likya Colony Chairman Jenithung Erui stated that the repair work is being carried out through the personal effort of MLA Humtsoe and not under any government-funded project. Appreciating the initiative, he said the intervention would bring much-needed relief to the people of Wokha. Erui also highlighted the difficulties experienced by elderly persons, students and worshippers, particularly on Sundays and during church-related events, due to the road’s poor condition.

Ward-5 Town Councillor Nzanthung Lotha informed that the repair work would cover the stretch from Mother Church towards DBHSS. Seeking cooperation from the public, he requested commuters to bear with temporary inconvenience during the construction period.

He informed that preparatory work has already begun and that full-scale repair activities are expected to commence from Monday, with completion anticipated within approximately one week.
