The Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) has yet again distanced itself from remarks made by its former president K Therie. In its latest press release, the party has disagreed with Therie’s recent remark on the consultative meeting on the Naga political issue as “futile and a waste”.
While acknowledging some common ground on the concerns raised by him, the Congress also stated it is imperative for all “to embrace processes that promote consensus building, transparency and inclusivity” which is why it participated in the said meeting on 12th September and has made the demand for the details of the agreements signed between the Government of India and the Naga Political Groups be made available to the Political Affairs Committee (PAC) members as well the Civil Society.
The NPCC stated that while it is not a direct party to the Naga political talks, it understands the significance of the two agreements, and the body of groundwork laid down by successive central governments and preliminary agreement entered into during the years preceding that and expressed its readiness to contribute to the cause as and when called upon by the negotiating parties.
Further, the NPCC urged the Government of India to honour the agreements and to implement them at the earliest.
With regard to the call for the appointment of a new political interlocutor, it would auger well on all of us to refrain from assigning it negative connotations when there is not any in reality and create non existent complications to an already very complicated issue, but to see it for what it is at the most, a means of affecting coordination and accountability, the NPCC stated.
