NSDMA warns of thunderstorms and heavy rain across Nagaland

The Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA), Home Department, has issued a weather advisory for May 23 to 26, 2026, warning of thunderstorms accompanied by lightning, gusty winds, and heavy rainfall in several parts of the state.

According to the advisory, thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds of 30–40 kmph are very likely at isolated places across multiple districts during the period, with varying intensity from day to day.

On May 23, heavy rain and thunderstorms are likely in Peren, Dimapur, Kohima, Wokha, and Mokokchung districts, while Zunheboto, Longleng, Mon, and Tuensang may experience thunderstorms with lightning. No warning has been issued for Phek and Kiphire.

On May 24, isolated heavy rainfall with thunderstorms and lightning is expected in Peren, Dimapur, Kohima, and Wokha. Mokokchung and Mon may experience heavy rain with thunderstorms, while Zunheboto, Longleng, and Tuensang are also likely to witness thunderstorms. Phek and Kiphire remain outside the warning zone.

On May 25, thunderstorms with lightning are likely at isolated places in Peren, Dimapur, Kohima, Wokha, Mokokchung, Longleng, and Mon districts, while no warning has been issued for Phek, Kiphire, Zunheboto, and Tuensang.

On May 26, the advisory indicates no weather warning across Nagaland, with conditions expected to remain generally stable.

The Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority has advised citizens to remain vigilant and avoid taking shelter under trees or near electric poles during thunderstorms. The public has also been cautioned against venturing near water bodies and has been urged to exercise care while travelling in landslide-prone and low-lying areas.

Authorities further advised residents to follow updates issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) and district administrations for the latest weather information and safety instructions.
