NU’s Journalism and Mass Communication Dept launches 2nd ‘MassCom Chronicle’ newsletter

The Department of Journalism & Mass Communication, Nagaland University, Lumami, officially launched its 2nd Edition of departmental Newsletter “MassCom Chronicle” on May 6.

 

The event was graced by Habemo Ngullie, PEX/HOP, Akashvani Mokokchung, as the Special Guest, who officially launched the newsletter along with the department and guests, informed a press release.

Speaking at the launch, the Special Guest expressed heartfelt appreciation for being part of the meaningful event. “Newsletters like this are more than just collections of words on paper. They are voices of a community—in this case, the dynamic, thoughtful, and ever-curious voices of the journalism and mass communication students of Nagaland University,” Ngullie said.

Emphasizing the significance of responsible communication in today’s media landscape, the speaker noted, “In an age where misinformation spreads faster than facts, the role of trained communicators and ethical journalists is more important than ever. This newsletter stands as a reflection of your commitment to truth, creativity, and professionalism.”

Commendations were extended to the faculty and students whose hard work and collaboration made the edition possible. Ngullie highlighted how such initiatives nurture essential skills including writing, editing, design, leadership, and teamwork.

Addressing the students directly, Ngullie offered words of encouragement and inspiration: “Every article you write, every story you pursue, has the potential to make a difference. Use your voice wisely, speak up for those unheard, and never stop questioning the world around you.”

Ngullie wished the department for the continued growth of MassCom Chronicle envisioned as a platform that will keep informing, inspiring, and engaging readers with each new edition.

Prof Athungo Ovung, HoD, Department of Sociology NU, acknowledged the remarkable effort of the department. Athungo said  “This newspaper is more than just a publication, it is the testament of the vibrant academic lights that is happening within the University.” He also added that it reflected the dedication, determination as well as the intellectual participation of the students and teachers.

Ovung appreciated the students for their relentless effort, energy and active participation. In his concluding speech he said that initiatives like this give platform for sharpening skill and confidence

Peter Ki, Public Relation Officer (PRO), NU also emphasized on the excess of news where everyone can access news as long as they have internet. “With excess to news there are fake news and propaganda news which have led to conflict between to fake news or real news. JMC dept has become a human resource with dedicated teachers,” said Ki urging everyone to continue in this spirit.

Editor and sub-editor of the Newsletter “MassCom Chronicle”  Tiakumla and  Idaizeule shared on how the project strengthened their editorial and teamwork skills. They credited mentors and seniors for their guidance and highlighted the newsletter’s role in reflecting both academic and campus life. The team expressed hope that the publication will continue to grow and represent the voices of the department.

The event brought together faculty members, students, and esteemed guests to mark the achievement and underscore the importance of student-led media initiatives.

The programme was chaired by Petekhrienuo Kulnu, Research Scholar, while the welcome address was delivered by Dr. Arjun Das, Assistant Professor of the de’artment. The event concluded with a vote of thanks by Ayimba Jamir, Research Scholar.

Senior Professor Mithilesh Kumar Sinha also spoke during the event appreciating the students’ initiative and encouraging them to pursue journalistic excellence.
