Plantation drive held at Longleng

The inaugural programme of a plantation drive, an initiative of Lemsachenlok in collaboration with the District Planning & Development Board (DPDB), Longleng, was held at Orangkong Junction along NH-702A on June 20.

The plantation drive was formally inaugurated by Thungchanbemo Tungoe, Additional Deputy Commissioner, Longleng. In his address, he stressed the need for collective responsibility in protecting the environment and urged all sections of society to actively participate in tree-planting and conservation initiatives.

Addressing the gathering, Y Nuklu Phom, Chairman, Lemsachenlok, highlighted the importance of environmental conservation and community participation in afforestation efforts.

He further informed that all saplings planted under the plantation drive would be geo-tagged to facilitate proper monitoring, documentation, and assessment of their growth and survival.

RS Prasad, IFS, Divisional Forest Officer (DFO), Longleng, spoke on the significance of plantation drives in maintaining ecological balance and combating climate change. He encouraged citizens to actively contribute towards environmental protection through tree plantation and conservation activities.

YB Angam Phom, President, Phom People’s Council (PPC), also emphasized the importance of planting and nurturing trees for the benefit of future generations. He expressed hope that the initiative would contribute significantly to environmental conservation and help create a greener Longleng.

Earlier, the programme commenced under the chairmanship of Er Keyileuteing Ndang, EAC, Sakshi. The invocation prayer was offered by Pangpen, Pastor, Orangkong Baptist Church.

The district-wide plantation drive is being organized jointly by DPDB Longleng and Lemsachenlok and covers a stretch from New Medical Site to Lemsachenlok Office Junction (Approx. 12 km) along NH-702A.

A total of 41 Government Departments participated in the plantation drive along with Orangkong Village Council (OVC) and Phom People’s Council (PPC). The participating departments and organizations were assigned specific stretches of the route to undertake plantation and maintenance activities under the supervision of designated officers.

The programme concluded with the ceremonial plantation of saplings, marking the official launch of the district’s plantation drive aimed at promoting a greener, healthier, and more sustainable environment. The initiative reflects the collective commitment of government departments, community organizations, and local stakeholders towards environmental conservation and sustainable development in Longleng district.
