Preserving Heritage: Pottery and Bamboo Craft Workshop begins at Mokokchung’s School of Culture

Mokokchung: School of Culture welcomes both male and female students, recognizing employment challenges faced by all genders

A two-day workshop on Pottery and Bamboo Craft commenced at the Women Resource Centre in Marepkong Ward, Mokokchung on September 22, 2023. The workshop is organized by the School of Culture, Watsü Mungdang, an initiative which seeks to safeguard the cultural legacy of the Ao Nagas.

In her welcome address, S Arenla Longkumer, President of Watsü Mungdang, expressed the significance of this endeavor. She highlighted how the “School of Culture” emerged from resolutions adopted during the 22nd general conference in 2021, emphasizing its crucial role in preserving and celebrating the rich culture of the Ao Naga.

“Today’s workshop is a kickstart to our long-awaited venture,” she stated, hinting at even grander plans. The school aspires to offer certificate courses encompassing weaving, handicrafts, cultural preservation, and more, coupled with the provision of essential infrastructure.

“The trainees will not only benefit themselves but also learn to sustain their lives through such programs”, she asserted. She also revealed plans for a museum and library establishment in the near future, with an aim to preserve the Ao Naga’s rich cultural heritage.

Dr. Adangla Changkija, Convenor of the School of Culture stressed the connection between indigenous crafts and tourism development. She said workshops like this encourage rural tourism and self-sustainability. Altogether 14 individuals, 12 for ‘Pottery’ and 2 for ‘Bamboo Crafts’, have enrolled in this workshop. Inclusively, the School of Culture welcomed both male and female students, recognizing the employment challenges faced by all genders.

Guru S. Pangyang Ozukum from Mopungchuket Village, is the resource person for the ‘Bamboo Craft’ workshop, while members from Changki Watsü are the resource persons for the Pottery workshop during the two-day event.
