The Sümi Hoho has come out in support of the organisations that have voiced out against the Naga Mothers’ Association and its activities.
Reiterating the resolution made by the eight tribal Hohos of Nagaland on 13 January 2023 at Kohima, ‘Any organisation that claims to represent and stand for the interests of the Nagas, should be routed and mandated through the tribal apex Hohos’, the apex body of the Sümi tribe said on Friday hinted that the NMA is an unmandated organisation.
It reminded that it had ‘recalled’ Sümi Totimi Hoho (STH), the apex women body of the tribe, from NMA on 4 February 2017 ‘as it was evident that NMA has lost its direction and the Sümi Hoho felt that the good image and role of the STH should never be compromised whatsoever.’
SH also said that NMA is being run by a ‘few individuals, on the pretext of fighting for women’s rights’ and thereby urged the Government of Nagaland to avoid involving such unmandated organisations and also those from outside the state ‘to discuss issues pertaining to the state’.
It affirmed that it ‘strongly propagates and stands for women empowerment’, and that it encourages Naga women to participate in just Municipal committees but also in the state and national politics.

In the past few days, Angami Public Organisation, Chakhesang Public Organisation, Rengma Hoho and Angami Youth Organisation have condemned the activities of the Naga Mothers’ association, accusing a few women of running the show for their own selfish objectives and of attempting to destroy customary laws.
The NMA had in reply written to the Nagaland Governor citing that it has contributed much to ‘peace, social order and promoting women’s rights as Human Rights’ in the state. It also said that it has great respect for the rich culture and traditions of Nagas.
The Rengma Hoho, on Thursday, directed the Rengma Mothers’ association to dissociate from NMA. On Friday, AYO banned NMA from conducting any activities within the Angami Jurisdiction.
