A major subsidence on the National Highway-2 near Phesama, a few meters away from the Naga Heritage Village exit has left commuters and public in dismay.

National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) informed restoration of the road may likely take two to three days. Authorities have suspended movement of heavy vehicles.

Vehicles have been stuck on either side of the sinking road, leaving travellers stranded on both sides of the highway.

Additional Superintendent of Police (Traffic) Kohima, Tshurhosie Kajiri said landslide has occurred in a sinking zone, and while some vehicles were able to ply the area till late May 29, at least three heavy loaded trucks attempting to cross the area got stuck, effectively blocking off the entire road. The official said that works are underway to tow the trucks that are stuck at the site. Adequate personnel have been deployed to monitor and regulate movement along the alternate routes, it was informed.

Meanwhile the Kohima district administration has announced that the affected stretch of NH-2 would remain completely closed until further notice. All heavy vehicles travelling towards Kohima from Manipur would be halted at Khuzama, while those heading towards Manipur from Dimapur are to be halted at Sechü Zubza. For light motor vehicles (LMVs), alternate routes have been notified. The district administration has also cautioned the public to stay away from affected electric poles and conductors in the area until they are secured by the relevant department.
