Secretary, Personnel and Administrative Reforms Akunu S. Meyase advocates for sustainable tourism at 19th Dzülekemia Day

Addressing the 19th Dzülekemia Day on 25 January 2025 at Dzüleke in Kohima district, Akunu S. Meyase, IAS, Secretary, Personnel and Administrative Reforms, and Economics and Statistics, called for promotion of sustainable tourism.

A press release informed that in her speech, Meyase acknowledged that the state’s, growing prosperity through tourism, but stressed the need for a shift towards sustainable tourism to ensure chance for future generation is not compromised.

She said that for tourism to be truly sustainable, its advantages must outweigh any negative consequences. While it is important to cater to tourists, she stressed the welfare of the local community should remain the priority.

Meyase outlined three key factors necessary for achieving sustainable tourism: protecting and maintaining the environment including forests, water, and air; Enhancing the local community’s economy; and preserving cultural authenticity.

She urged the people not to compromise their traditions, including dress and food, simply to accommodate visitors, expressing concern over instances where communities have compromised their way of life, ultimately leading to a loss of identity.

The Secretary also emphasized the need for improving infrastructure, such as roads, schools, sanitation, and healthcare facilities, to support tourism’s growth. She encouraged the gathering to look beyond short-term benefits and focus on long-term gains for future generations.

Meyase challenged the gathering to harness tourism to enhance local infrastructure, and to step out of their comfort zones in pursuit of progress and betterment

Around 150 people, including villagers and residents from outside the area, attended the event, marked by folk songs, community feast, followed by panel discussion.
