Strong wind, rain, hailstorm leave trail of mess in Dimapur

Kohima: IMD predicts moderate rainfall with isolated thunderstorm & lightning & gusty winds in NE till 28th April

Strong wind accompanied by rain and hailstorm lashed Dimapur on Wednesday afternoon leaving a mess behind. Power lines are reportedly snapped in several areas in the district while two vehicles, one each in Welford Colony and Supermarket area, are said to had been damaged as tree branches fell on them.

Debris blown by the strong wind blocked roads but the administration soon got busy clearing them. There has however been no reports of casualties or injuries at the time of filing this report.

The Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA), Home Department, had earlier send a warning though SMS that thunderstorm with lightning and gusty wind at the speed of 30-40 Kmph was very likely at most parts of Chümoukedima, Dimapur, Kohima, Mokokchung, Tseminyu and Wokha and urged public to follow the safety guidelines.

The erratic weather in April has caused severe damages in many districts in Nagaland including damages to houses, fields, roads in Phek, Niuland, Peren, Mokokchung, Tuensang, Shamator, Noklak, Wokha, Kiphire, Zunheboto and Chümoukedima. The Extreme weather has also unfortunately claimed a life in Noklak’s Pathso Nokeng Village.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has said that the weather conditions in Nagaland and the other states of the Northeast is because of a cyclonic circulation lies over northeast Assam in lower tropospheric levels.

In a press release issued on Wednesday, IMD has stated, “Fairly widespread to widespread light to moderate rainfall/snowfall accompanied with isolated thunderstorm & lightning & gusty winds (30-40 kmph) very likely over Arunachal Pradesh, and isolated to scattered rainfall over Assam & Meghalaya and Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram & Tripura during 24th -28th April, 2024.”
