The Forest Range Office, Kohima has installed tracking cameras in the areas in Dapfütsumia Khel (D Khel), Kohima Village, where a large animal has been sighted on numerous occasions.
The Forest Range Officer Kohima has on 11th September 2024 cautioned the public from venturing in the area where a ‘tiger’ has been seen.
The President of the D Khel Youth Organisation has told Nagaland Tribune that it has not been determined yet whether the large animal is a tiger or a leopard.
He informed that the first footprint was discovered on 29th August 2024, but there were no eyewitnesses at that time. Later, on 9th September, two separate individuals reported seeing a wild animal around 11 PM on different occasion in Rüziezou Colony. He informed that a confirmed sighting also occurred again on the night of 11th September.

The President said they informed the Forest Department of the sightings who responded on 11th September. They came and confirmed the presence of claw marks and installed tracking cameras, which are set to be reviewed on Sunday, he said, expressing hope that they will be able to make an identification by the end of this week.
The DYO President further mentioned that the youth have expressed concerns to the DFO and Deputy Commissioner, Kohima, and informed them that if this animal poses a threat to villagers, they will take action and shoot it on sight.
