The SQAY Martial Art Association of Nagaland (SMAAN) has lauded Pushen and Khuming on their outstanding performances in winning bronze medals in the Senior Category at the 3rd SQAY Martial Art National Championship 2024-2025, held in Maharashtra from November 18 to 20 of 2024.

A total of five participants from Nagaland, including four athletes and one coach participated in the championship:  Khuming (66kg category), Luping K (66kg category), K. Pushen (62kg category),  Henu (70kg category) and coach Gabriel, whose leadership and expertise played a pivotal role in their success.

“The achievements of Mr Pushen and Mr. Khuming not only bring pride to the state but also inspire future generations to pursue martial arts and sports with passion and dedication. This accomplishment highlights the untapped potential of Nagaland’s youth, particularly those from rural areas who possess exceptional talent and physical endurance. Unfortunately, these individuals are often overlooked and denied opportunities to showcase their abilities at state, national, and international levels,” stated a press release by the media team.

The youth in rural Nagaland are gifted with diverse talents and remarkable stamina, making them capable of competing with world-class athletes. However, the Association asserted that their potential remains largely untapped due to systemic neglect, favouritism, and a lack of inclusive sports policies that transcend tribal, clan, and regional biases. “If efforts are focused on identifying and nurturing talented individuals regardless of their background, Nagaland can achieve significant milestones in the global sports arena,” stated the Association.

It further added, “As the recently appointed President, Mr. Lepzungchiba Jamir SQAY Martial Art Association Nagaland, he took it upon to address these issues. When learned about the opportunity to participate in the National games he prioritized scouting talent from grassroots levels. From rural areas he identified and selected on Merit basis promising athletes based on their potential and passion for their respective sports. Despite limited resources, the Association provided them with comprehensive training for one month, covering all expenses and ensuring they had access to facilities comparable to athletes from other states. This short but focused preparation bore fruit as the team secured two bronze medals, a testament to their determination and inherent talent.”

According to the Association, the success underscores the urgent need for the government of Nagaland to shift its approach by investing in structured training programs and extending equal opportunities to all talented sports enthusiasts. Through such initiatives, the Association believed that the state can foster a new generation of athletes capable of excelling on national and international platforms.

“It is time for the government to rise above tribal and regional preferences and prioritize merit and ability. With proper support and training, Nagaland’s youth can not only achieve their dreams but also bring glory and recognition to the state in various fields of sports. Let this achievement be a wake-up call for all stakeholders to work collectively towards nurturing the state’s immense sporting potential,” added the Association.
