A training programme on Sustainable Farming Techniques in Piggery and Poultry was held at the Niropen Community Hall, Wokha, on June 25 to empower women farmers from Niropen Colony and Longsa Village. The initiative, under the Beti Bachao Beti Padhao (BBBP) scheme, was jointly organised by the Wokha district administration, department of Social Welfare, and the District Hub for Empowerment of Women (DHEW) in collaboration with the Nagaland State Rural Livelihood Mission (NSRLM) and Tepzen Agro Food and Farm Tech Tseminyu.
Dr. Gwazenlo Tep, Veterinary Assistant Surgeon Wokha, and consultant at Tepzen Agro Food and Farm Tech, who was the resource person for the training delivered an in-depth session on sustainable piggery and poultry practices suited to the regional context. Emphasising the growing demand for pork in Nagaland—which remains one of India’s largest pork-importing states—Tep called for increased local production by blending scientific methods with indigenous knowledge systems.

He also addressed critical aspects such as breed selection based on specific farming goals, economic viability of livestock farming, and shared detailed profit and expenditure models derived from Tepzen’s operational farms. He stressed the importance of animal health management, encouraging farmers to adopt regular vaccination schedules and maintain strict biosecurity protocols in light of the ongoing threat from African Swine Fever (ASF).
The training programme witnessed enthusiastic participation from over 120 women farmers from local communities and surrounding areas. In a move to encourage practical application, each participant received free Tepzen chicken feed and chicks as support.
The event was chaired by Chichanthung L Ezung, Gender Specialist at DHEW.
