In observation of the annual international campaign – 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence – a programme was held today at Hopongkyü Memorial Hall in Kiphire Town.
The event was organised by the District Administration, Sakhi-One Stop Centre, Kiphire in collaboration with Akheda Sangtamlarü Thsingmüjang (AST), Tikhir Women Association (TWA) and Eastern Sumi Totimi Hoho (ESTH).

Legal laws relating to women was deliberated by Lizila, panel lawyer, District Legal Service Authority (DLSA). She spoke on the Domestic Violence Act 2005 and sexual harassment of women at the workplace.

The programme was attended by stakeholders, students, teachers, women organisations, church representatives and representatives from all 11 wards under Kiphire Town.
Humtsase Sangtam, the second runner-up of the 1st edition of Star Gazer Solo Singing Competition enthralled the gathering with a special number.
The programme was chaired by Tsaosela, assistant general secretary of AST.
The invocation was pronounced by Elsy, president of the Catholic Women Association, St Peter’s Parish, Kiphire.
The welcome address was given by Rolila, Centre administrator, Sakhi One Stop Centre.
The benediction was pronounced by Imola Imchen, pastor of Ao Baptist Church, Kiphire Town.

The 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence is observed by various institutions, civil society organisations and the United Nations for raising awareness on the prevention and elimination of all forms of violence against women and girls.
The annual campaign begins on 25 November, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, and runs till 10 December, Human Rights Day.
Begun in 1991 by activists at the inauguration of the Women’s Global Leadership Institute, the campaign continues to be managed every year by the Center for Women’s Global Leadership.
In 2008, the United Nations Secretary-General, in support of the 16 Days of Activism, launched the campaign UNiTE by 2030 to End Violence against Women. Both campaigns run parallel to each other.
The theme for this year’s UNiTE Campaign is ‘UNITE! Activism to end violence against women and girls’.
