Black Day was solemnly observed across Wokha district on April 14 following a call by the Lotha Students’ Union (LSU), with educational institutions and the public paying tribute to the martyrs.
The observance was held in memory of late Chumdamo Tungoe of Phiro village and late Thungkhomo Ezung of Longsa village, who laid down their lives on April 14, 1977, during a police firing incident at a peaceful procession organised by the Union.
As part of the programme, schools across the district conducted silent prayers, while LSU officials visited the families and resting places of the martyrs, where wreaths were laid. A prayer service was also held, invoking peace for the departed souls and strength for the bereaved families.

The Union reaffirmed its commitment to uphold the cause for which the martyrs made the ultimate sacrifice and assured continued solidarity with their families.
Meanwhile, on April 13, LSU members carried out a social work initiative at the Martyrs’ Park Memorial as part of the pre-observance. The programme concluded peacefully across the district.
