In a significant move toward digital governance, a distribution programme for specialized IT equipment was held on April 16 at the Deputy Commissioner’s Conference Hall, Zunheboto. The initiative, spearheaded by the Department of Economics and Statistics, aims to streamline online birth registration and integrated Aadhaar enrollment across the district.
The event featured Secretary to the Government of Nagaland and Chief Registrar of Births and Deaths, Akunu S Meyase, as the special guest. Meyase underscored the legal necessity of birth and death certificates, noting that the transition to a fully online portal is essential to overcome Nagaland’s unique geographical and infrastructural hurdles.
Supported by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), the initiative provides the hardware necessary to replace manual logging with a more resilient digital framework.
Meyase urged local registrars-many of whom are educators-to be proactive in their duties, particularly regarding the state’s low death registration rates, suggesting suo motu action to ensure comprehensive documentation.
Additional Director of Economics and Statistics, Neisatuo Puro provided a technical overview of the system, highlighting that of the 300 IT units allocated statewide, Zunheboto has received 25 units. While 177 of the district’s 192 registrars are currently on the portal, active usage remains low. Therefore, he emphasised that registrations should ideally be completed within 21 days. Delayed filings (past 30 days) require additional legal formalities via the Deputy Commissioner or Magistrate.

DC Zunheboto, Dharam Raj, IAS, highlighted that the new digitized certificates will feature QR codes, facilitating a “faceless” and transparent verification process that reduces duplication and enhances public trust.
The 25 IT equipment units have been strategically deployed to ADC, SDO, and EAC headquarters, alongside selected village hubs. The recipient locations include: Aghunato Town, Asuto Town, Pughoboto Town, Tokiye Town, Satami, Kitami, Philimi, Khumishi B, Saptiqa, Akuluto Town, AtoizuTown, Shopiu, Lumami, Asukhuto Town, Satakha Town, VK Town, Chisholimi, Ghukiye, Asukuhomi, Mukalimi, Suruhuto Town, Baimho, Satoi Town, Thakiye and DESO office Zunheboto.
The programme was chaired by Deputy Director, K Rhanbemo Kithan and concluded with a vote of thanks from Inato Assumi, Registrar of Births and Deaths for Satami Village.
