Member of Parliament (Lok Sabha), S Supongmeren Jamir has shared the official response received from Union Minister of State for Education and DoNER, Sukanta Majumdar, regarding the establishment and strengthening of higher educational infrastructure in Nagaland.
According to the communication, the issue was raised during Zero Hour on December 4, 2025, highlighting the demand for allotment of land for setting up an Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in the state.
The Government of India, in its response, stated that its current priority is to strengthen and expand existing institutions while aligning them with the National Education Policy (NEP), with a focus on promoting multidisciplinary and high-quality education.

The Ministry noted that Nagaland already has key centrally funded institutions, including Nagaland University and National Institute of Technology Nagaland.
Under the Pradhan Mantri Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan (PM-USHA), a total outlay of ₹1,292.16 crore has been approved for the period 2023–24 to 2025–26 to enhance access, equity, and excellence in higher education.
Further, under various phases of the Rashtriya Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan (RUSA), 39 projects have been sanctioned for Nagaland with a total allocation of ₹254.06 crore, including a central share of ₹229.57 crore. Additionally, under PM-USHA, a central share of ₹130.46 crore has already been released to the state as of March 25, 2026.
On the proposal for establishing an IIT in Nagaland, the Ministry acknowledged that a request was received on January 1, 2025, and stated that the matter has been noted, with further developments to be communicated in due course.
While outlining the ongoing investments and initiatives, Jamir reiterated that the demand for a premier institution like an IIT in Nagaland remains of critical importance for the youth and long-term development of the state. He affirmed that efforts will continue to pursue the matter at the highest level.
