MGM College celebrated the 80th Independence Day of India on August 15, with a strong display of patriotism, national pride and youthful enthusiasm. The celebration, organized under the inspiring theme “Yuva Shakti for Vikshit Bharat @ 2047”, placed the youth at the centre of India’s journey towards becoming a developed and self-reliant nation.

The programme was chaired by Jemsungba Walling, IQAC Coordinator, MGM College. The celebration began with the hoisting of the National Flag by Fr Shaiju Philip, Administrator, followed by the National Anthem. The National Pledge was subsequently administered by Kailang Phom, Assistant Professor, Department of Political Science, reaffirming the gathering’s commitment to the values of patriotism, unity, responsibility and constitutional citizenship.

One of the major highlights of the celebration was the screening of a special audio-visual presentation, “Glimpses of India Before Independence.” The presentation vividly portrayed the difficult conditions faced by Indians under colonial rule and traced the nation’s arduous journey towards independence. Through significant events and milestones of the freedom movement, the presentation brought alive the courage, determination and sacrifices of India’s freedom fighters.

It reminded the younger generation that the freedom enjoyed today was secured through immense personal sacrifice, perseverance and an unwavering commitment to the cause of the nation. The Special Independence Day Message was delivered by Fr Shaiju Philip, Administrator. Extending warm greetings to the gathering, he reflected on the historic significance of India’s independence and emphasised that freedom carries with it a profound responsibility.

He called upon the students to recognise themselves not merely as beneficiaries of India’s progress but as active participants and future architects of the nation. He stressed that the strength of India lies in its young population and that the aspirations of Viksit Bharat @ 2047 can be realised only through educated, skilled, disciplined, responsible and socially conscious young citizens.

Fr Shaiju Philip urged the students to draw inspiration from the sacrifices of the freedom fighters and to transform their knowledge and abilities into meaningful contributions to society.

He emphasised the importance of integrity, hard work, unity, discipline and service, reminding the gathering that nation-building begins with individual responsibility.

The celebration carried a strong message that patriotism must go beyond ceremonies and slogans. It must be reflected in responsible citizenship, respect for democratic values, commitment to education, social harmony and a willingness to contribute to the welfare of others. The programme concluded with a valedictory prayer led by Dr R K Behera, Principal, MGM College, bringing the celebration to a solemn and meaningful close.
