Assam Cabinet institutes one man inquiry commission in police-Meghalaya civilian conflict situation

The Government of Assam has instituted a one-man inquiry commission to conduct inquiry into the circumstances leading to the incident near Mokoilum market in West Karbi Anglong where six individuals lost their lives, and several were injured.

Hon’ble Justice Rumi Phukan, Retired Judge of Gauhati High Court will head the inquiry and submit the report within 60 days.

This was decided at the Assam Cabinet meeting held on Wednesday.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stated, in a series of tweets, that the cabinet “expressed deep concern and condolences” to all affected by the “unfortunate police-civilian conflict situation”.

He also said that the cabinet has decided to hand over the related police investigation to CBI.

The Cabinet has advised the police to restrain from use of lethal weapons while dealing with civilian population, he added.

Sarma also said that the Home Department will issue a detailed SOP for the police to deal with such situation with civilians in future and that all Police Station in charges will be properly sensitized on such matters.

Similar instructions will be issued and SOP will be prepared by the Environment and Forest Department for their officers accordingly, the CM stated on the social media platform.
