The Chief Executive Officer Kohima Municipal Council (KMC), T Lanusenla Longkumer, has made an appeal to the citizens of Kohima to actively participate in the Swachhata Hi Seva (SHS) 2024 campaign. The SHS fortnight, scheduled from September 14 to October 1, 2024, is themed “Clean Habits, Clean Values” and serves as a prelude to Swachh Bharat Diwas on October 2.
In a public statement, Longkumer highlighted the objectives of the SHS 2024 campaign, focusing on large-scale citizen advocacy, cleanliness drives, and the clearing of garbage spots across Kohima. The campaign also aims to recognize the contributions of sanitation workers and renew the city’s commitment to sustainable waste management.
One of the events during the SHS campaign will be a cleanliness drive on September 18, starting at 7:00 AM from the Old MLA Hostel Junction. All citizens have been invited to join this initiative and are also encouraged to organize and participate in similar drives within their respective wards, colonies, and offices.

Addressing the pressing issue of waste, particularly plastic waste, Longkumer emphasized that irresponsible disposal practices have had devastating effects on Kohima’s environment, including choking rivers like Doyang and Sanuorü. She stressed the importance of adopting practices like source segregation and the 3Rs: Reuse, Reduce, Recycle to foster a healthier and more sustainable Kohima.
The appeal is a call to action for all Kohima residents to contribute to cleaner and healthier surroundings.
