The Mokokchung Press Club observed National Press Day today under the theme ‘Media’s Role in Nation Building’ at Hotel Magnus.

P Tia Mollier, Assistant Professor, Department of Botany, Fazl Ali College was the Special Guest of the event.

In his address, Mollier said, “Learning is essential in order to live”.

Citing the current international geo political crises in Europe, he opined that the media is playing an important role in Ukraine-Russia war and noted that the media has been evolving due to ever changing socio-economic and political dynamics.

In this regard, he emphasised on six areas where journalists could contribute to nation building within the Mokokchung context.

Speaking on census and statistics, Mollier said the extinction of a society is linked to its population and stressed that journalists should give importance to this issue, since the projected Mokokchung population is shrinking at an alarming rate.

He also stressed on the importance of bringing developmental projects and examination centres such as Central University Entrance Training (CUET) in the district for the welfare of the people.

He opined that for a young population, improvising the education system in the district is very much needed in order to accommodate families posted in the district and to also make Mokokchung into an educational hub.

“[A] good education system attracts people,” he asserted.

The professor further emphasised on valuing social ethics and encouraged the journalists to look beyond development and to bridge the gap between the youth and senior citizens.

Mollier also observed that the skill of writing one’s mind is on the verge of extinction with computers taking control.

In this connection, he said including writing skills would enhance a holistic functioning of the academic curriculum. The media fraternity can play an important role in conducting awareness programmes and workshops, he added.

Mollier further provoked journalists in addressing the issue with evidence.

Limalenden Longkumer, President Mokokchung Press Club while delivering his welcome address stated that the state has three Press Clubs stationed in Kohima, Dimapur and Mokokchung.

He underlined on the increasing globalisation of the world with technology and cautioned how a reporter should suffice the needs of the people.
