Mon Migration Trail: Mon Police launches Youth Migration Monitoring and Safety

BY | Monday, 19 May, 2025

In a significant step towards ensuring the safety and well-being of young citizens venturing outside the state for work or education, the Mon District Police launched the “Youth Migration Monitoring & Safety” programme on May 17 at the SP office, Mon.

According to a press release by the Addl. Superintendent of Police and PRO Mon, the landmark initiative, also known as “Mon Migration Trail”, was formally inaugurated in the presence of distinguished dignitaries including S. Phangnon Konyak, Member of Rajya Sabha; Wennyei Konyak, Deputy Commissioner of Mon; and Kanchan Kumar Kandpal, IPS, Superintendent of Police, Mon.

The programme was officially launched by MP Phangnon Konyak, who lauded the effort as a timely and much-needed intervention for the youth of the region. She spoke of the challenges faced by young individuals migrating out of the state and emphasised the need for compassionate, community-based solutions. Konyak praised the initiative for addressing these concerns in a structured and meaningful way, combining technology with local collaboration.

Deputy Commissioner Wennyei Konyak, in his address, commended the collaborative approach of the programme and urged all stakeholders- particularly village leaders and civil society—to actively contribute to its success. He stressed the importance of keeping the database current and using it to extend timely support to those in need, adding that the district administration would continue to lend full support to the initiative.

Superintendent of Police Kanchan Kumar Kandpal, in his detailed explanation and demonstration of the system, shared the vision behind the initiative. He noted that the Mon district has long witnessed a steady stream of youth migrating in search of better opportunities. While many succeed, others often fall into distressing circumstances—being underpaid, defrauded, or subjected to abuse. These cases often go unreported due to the  absence of any formal tracking mechanism. The programme, he explained, is designed to bridge this gap by establishing a proactive and inclusive safety net.

By collaborating with village councils, church leaders, and community organisations, the system will maintain updated records of individuals who have migrated— detailing their destination, occupation, and the agent or reference who facilitated their departure.

This information will be securely stored at the SP’s office and accessed only by authorised personnel. A dedicated police team will remain in touch with migrants, offering support and intervention when necessary. To make the system simple and accessible, a WhatsApp-based registration platform has been introduced.

Migrants can register by sending “HI” to the official WhatsApp number 6009596367, and following a few easy prompts. No separate app is required, and the system is designed to be user-friendly, secure, and quick.

Thc SP stressed that the initiative is not merely about rescuing people in distress but also about establishing justice, dignity, and accountability. He pointed out that many families suffer silently when their loved ones face difficulties, and justice remains out of reach because no official record exists. With this programme, that gap will finally begin to close.

The Superintendent of Police underscored that while the programme is being implemented by the police, it is fundamentally a community-anchored effort—realised through the collective vision of the MP and the Deputy Commissioner, and strengthened by the active participation of village councils, churches, student bodies, and other local institutions.

The Presidents of the Konyak Union (KU), Konyak Nyupuh Sheko Khong (KNSK), and Konyak Students’ Union (KSU)—the apex organisations of the Konyak community—also addressed the gathering. They commended the initiative as a timely and visionary step for safeguarding the youth and affirmed their commitment to extend full cooperation in its implementation across the district.

The event concluded with a brief video demonstration of the registration and tracking process, helping attendees better understand how the system works and how they can contribute to its effectiveness. The Mon District Police called upon all members of the public to spread awareness and participate actively in this effort. This programme, while spearheaded by the police, stands as a collective community initiative-grounded in the shared responsibility of ensuring no one is left behind.

With this initiative, Mon sends a clear and powerful message: no individual from the district  shall be left unprotected, unheard, or alone when they step out in search of a brighter future, stated the press release.

The event was chaired by Bendangwati Ao, SDPO Mon, with a welcome address by H. Pongloi, SDPO Tizit, and concluded with a benediction by John, Assistant Commandant, Village Guard.
