In response to years of neglect and deteriorating conditions, the Mokokchung Village Council has undertaken repair works on the stretch of road from the Main Police point to AM road leading to Mokokchung village. The road, which falls under the jurisdiction of the Department of Urban Development, has remained in a deplorable state despite being a key route serving several important public establishments.
Council Member I. Wapang Kichu informed that the road was previously under the Public Works Department (R&B) but came under the Department of Urban Development in 2023. However, since the transition, it has remained unattended.
“The road has been left neglected for many years. It is a crucial route that connects not only Mokokchung village but also several important establishments including Queen Mary Higher Secondary School, Government High School, All India Radio Station, the Superintendent of Police’s office, R. Kathing Park, and the Metsüben Tourist Lodge,” Kichu stated.

With the Mini Hornbill Festival scheduled to take place in May and daily commuters—school children, teachers, parents, and tourists—facing difficulty navigating the stretch, the Village Council has decided to take the initiative to repair the road using its own limited resources.
According to the council, the last official maintenance was carried out in 2016–2017. Since then, the condition has worsened due to increased traffic and the lack of follow-up repairs. In the absence of government intervention, Queen Mary Higher Secondary School’s parent body once stepped in to carry out temporary repairs, and an adjacent house owner also reportedly funded minor maintenance works out of pocket.
To address the issue formally, the Village Council has submitted a representation to the Urban Development Officer and has also appealed to the state government, urging for immediate and comprehensive repair of the road.
Kichu emphasized that while the current works are being carried out to ensure basic accessibility, a long-term solution must come from the concerned authorities.
The road will remain close for the next three days for repair works. Commuters, have therefore, been directed to travel via Tongdentsuyong -Mokokchung Village.
