NSDMA urges public to exercise caution as heavy rain, thunderstorm and gusty winds expected to continue

Kohima: Heavy rainfall may damage the crops in maturity stage, damage vulnerable structures

The Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA), Home Department, had advised the public to exercise caution as heavy rain along with thunderstorm and gusty winds (speed 30-40 kmph) is expected to continue in the state till 16th April 2024 as per the Indian Meteorological Department, Regional Office, Guwahati. In this regard, NSDMA directed all the District Disaster Management Authorities and other line departments to be on alert to save lives and properties.

The disaster management Authority informed that these showers will be accompanied with other pre-Monsoon activities such as lightning, hailstorm, thunderstorm along with squally winds. In the districts of Peren, Dimapur, Kohima, Phek, Wokha, Zunheboto, Kiphire, Mokokchung, Shamator, Tseminyu and Tuensang, partly cloudy heavy rainfall along with strong winds and lightning is expected in isolated places,” it said.

NSDMA also notified that during this period the maximum temperature will be around 31℃ and the minimum temperature will see a dip during this time, settling even below 11℃ over the hilly areas.

Probable Impacts

  1. Visibility may become poor due to intense spell of rainfall leading to traffic congestion.
  2. Temporary disruption of traffic due to water logging in roads/ uprooting of trees leading to increased travel time.
  3. Partial damages to kutcha houses and huts.
  4. Possibility of damages to vulnerable structures due to Heavy rainfall/landslides.
  5. Heavy rainfall may damage the crops in the maturity stage.
  6. Take appropriate shelter during thunderstorms and lightning activities.
