Phase-5 polling in 49 Lok Sabha seats on 20 May; Rahul Gandhi, Rajnath Singh among candidates

Voters in 49 Parliament Constituencies across Bihar, Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Jharkhand, Maharashtra, Odisha, Uttar Pradesh, and West Bengal will cast their votes tomorrow during the Phase-5 of the Lok Sabha polls. Polling for 35 Assembly Constituencies of the Odisha Legislative Assembly will also take place simultaneously.

Altogether, over 8.95 crore voters will exercise their democratic franchise across 94,732 polling stations.

Prominent candidates for Phase-5 include Congress leader Rahul Gandhi who will be contesting from Rae Bareli in Uttar Pradesh, the seat his mother, Sonia Gandhi, vacated earlier to become a Member of the Rajya Sabha.

Besides Gandhi, Union Defence Minister and BJP leader Rajnath Singh will be contesting from Lucknow in Uttar Pradesh, while Smriti Irani will be contesting from Amethi in UP and Piyush Goyal from Mumbai North, Maharashtra.

The Election Commission of India has said that it is all geared up for this Phase-5 of the Lok Sabha polls and urged voters to turnout in greater numbers at polling stations and vote with responsibility and pride.

It informed that so far, polling has been completed for 23 States/UTs and 379 PCs the Lok Sabha Elections 2024 with voter turnout of about 66.95%. The remaining 3 phases of polls will continue till the 1st of June with counting of votes scheduled on 4th June, ECI stated.

The Commission said on Saturday that the agencies have so far made seizures worth Rs 8889 crores in a crackdown on money power and inducements in the ongoing Lok Sabha elections. Drug seizures have been maximum, ECI stated.

Gujarat tops the list of most seizures at Rs 1461.73 crore, of which drug seizures amount Rs1187.80 crore. Rajasthan follows closely with Rs 1133.82 crore, of which Rs 756.77 crore is the worth of freebies / Other Items Value caught by the agencies.
