The Fourth edition of the “Tetsu Oshi Wazuka Ayuba Mapatong 2021 – 2024″ program, organized by the Ongpangkong Kaketshir Mungdang (OKM), has successfully raised awareness about the imperative need to preserve the Ao language. Under the theme ‘Tetsü Oshi Tali Senputi (let’s be more passionate about our mother tongue),” the event unfolded at Aliba village, witnessing a fervent gathering from various OKM units on August 12, 2023.

The highlight of the program was a remarkable competition that delved deep into the roots of the Ao culture — participants showcased their inner talents through self-composed Ao songs, presented in a quartet format. This innovative approach allowed for the seamless fusion of folk melodies, capturing the essence of their cultural heritage and emotions.

Distinguished guest, Advocate Imchayanger, Legal Advisor and PS to Minister Metsubo, graced the occasion and shed light on the profound role of mother tongue in shaping personal, social, and cultural identities. Expressing concern over the declining usage of mother tongue among youth outside Mokokchung, due to cross-cultural influences, he emphasized the urgency to pass down linguistic heritage to safeguard against its erosion.

Advocate Imchayanger commended OKM for nurturing enthusiasm among the younger generation, applauding the various competitions that not only enrich understanding of the mother tongue’s values but also contribute to preserving the distinct Ao tone, accent, and cultural ethos. Urging OKM to stay steadfast in its mission, he called for collaboration with Ao Senden and regional stakeholders to elevate the Ao language’s status in educational institutions.

Akumchila, President of Ongpangkong Tetsür Mungdang, addressed the audience, underscoring parents’ responsibility in ensuring the continuity of the Ao language. She reminded students of the potential regrets that come with neglecting their language and urged them to actively engage in speaking, writing, and reading Ao to keep the language vibrant.

In a riveting Ao song self-composition competition, Mokokchung Students’ Union emerged victorious, with Aliba Students’ Union and Soyim Students’ Union securing the first and second runner-up positions, respectively.
