Prof Patnaik emphasises need for indigenisation of research methods for better understanding of local social problems

The Ten-Day Research Methodology Course in Social Sciences was inaugurated on Tuesday at the Conference Hall, Department of Sociology, Nagaland University, Lumami Campus. The Course is being organised by the Department of Sociology, Nagaland University and organised by the Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR), Ministry of Education, Government of India, informed Peter Ki, PRO, Nagaland University.

Speaking at the inaugural programme as the Guest of Honour, Vice-Chancellor of Nagaland University, Prof. Jagadish K Patnaik, deliberated on the history and development of research methods in social sciences in India. He emphasised the need for the indigenisation of research methods for a better understanding of local social problems. He encouraged the participants to apply originality and contextualise the research methods to the Indian scenario. Prof Patnaik advised all the participants to actively engage in the course to improve their research skills.

Earlier, in his introductory remarks, Prof. Athungo Ovung, Course Director & Head, stressed the importance of research methodology as a fundamental aspect of research inquiry. He hoped that this course would help the participants get acquainted with the latest tools and techniques of social science research. Prof Ovung further stated that eminent researchers from across the country will deliver lectures as resource persons.

The inaugural programme was chaired by Prof. Toshimenla Jamir. The Vote of Thanks was proposed by Dr. Suraj Beri, who acknowledged the contribution and support of the university administration, colleagues and research scholars in the department for the successful inception of the ‘Ten Day Research Methodology Course in Social Sciences’.

The inaugural program was attended by the Dean of Social Sciences, faculty members from various departments, officers, and research scholars in the university. The ICSSR-sponsored Course will be held from 21st to 31st May 2024.
