The 6th Skill Fest at Oriental College Kohima kicked off on October 28, spanning three days and themed “Empowering Students Through Skills.”

In his opening speech, special guest EAC Dr. Riku Khutso, NCS highlighted that while his education system provided various life skills and degrees, the trades showcased at this event differ significantly from his own experiences. He expressed enthusiasm for the valuable skills being taught to today’s students and urged them to appreciate their opportunity to be part of such an event.

Dr. Khutso reflected on how the quality of education has evolved, noting that past approaches did not explore the same range of skills and development opportunities. He assured the students that the trades they learn now will remain with them, enabling them to earn a livelihood in the future.

Viewing that many Naga youths take pride in calling themselves “educated unemployed”, Dr. Khutso asserted that this mindset should be re-evaluated.

He encouraged students to focus on their future and recognize their employment potential, warning that there may come a time when they look back and regret not dedicating themselves more.

He stated that while there is a strong focus on Naga youths, the government sector has become saturated and cannot accommodate all educated individuals. Our young people need to build confidence and explore diverse opportunities.

He emphasized that “skill is the new currency”—possessing skills can significantly impact the economy. Education alone is not sufficient; we must prioritize skill development.

The program was earlier blessed with invocation by Neilapfheü Kuotsu while Principal Dr. Khriereizhünuo Dzüvichü pronounced the keynote address.

The skills to be inculcated at the fest are mushroom cultivation, Basket making, Bamboo Works, Carpentry, Electrical Fittings, Beauty and wellness, embroidery, Knitting and weaving, Baking and coffee making.
