The Food Safety Administration, Dimapur Zone, under the Office of the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) Dimapur, observed World Food Safety Day on June 9 at Government Higher Secondary School, Diphupar A, Chümoukedima. Although globally marked on June 7, the event was deferred this year as the date coincided with a national holiday.
Held under the theme “Food Safety: Science in Action,” the programme emphasized the importance of science-based strategies to promote food safety and prevent non-communicable diseases.
Delivering the keynote address, CMO Dr T Temsu Longkumer underscored the importance of caring for one’s health, especially during the summer. He encouraged the school to establish an ORS (Oral Rehydration Solution) corner to help students stay hydrated and prevent heat-related illnesses such as fainting or heat stroke.
Dr. Longkumer also warned against food poisoning, advising students to prefer home-cooked meals over readymade or leftover food. He urged students to develop the habit of reading food product labels and checking for FSSAI registration or license as a basic consumer right. “Food safety starts with awareness,” he said, adding that a balanced diet, timely meals, and adequate sleep are essential for good health.

Designated Officer for Food Safety, Samuel Zehol, highlighted the importance of embedding food safety and nutrition in the school curriculum. He emphasized that food safety is a shared responsibility and essential for a healthier society.
Zehol explained how this year’s theme aligns with national initiatives like FSSAI’s Eat Right India Movement and the government’s wider efforts to combat obesity and lifestyle diseases through preventive science-backed strategies rooted in safe wholesome food and traditional diets. He noted that with the rising concern of obesity due to excessive sugar and unhealthy trans-fat consumption, the Ministry of Health is working on sugar and oil reduction awareness campaigns targeting schools, workplaces, and public institutions
The event was chaired by C Henow Phom, Principal of the host school, who also delivered the welcome address. He highlighted that beyond academics, the school also offers vocational education to its students.
Students of Class 12 actively participated in the event, and five students were awarded prizes in a quiz competition. Earlier, Nzanbeni Lotha, Science GT, led the invocation prayer. Demonstrations on food adulterants, artificial dyes, and sugar awareness were conducted by food technicians Zuthungbemo Ngullie and Lika Assumi from the Food Safety on Wheels team, Dimapur.
The program concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Samlamgwamlie Michui, Food Safety Officer.
