The Indian Red Cross Society, Kiphire branch, observed World Red Cross Day on the theme “United in Humanity” with Longdiba L Sangtam attending as the special guest.

Addressing the programme, Longdiba said the day marks the birth anniversary of Henry Dunant, the visionary founder of the International Committee of the Red Cross and the first recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize.

He said the Red Cross represents a global movement driven by selfless service, with volunteers often being the first responders during natural disasters, health crises, and conflicts by providing medical care, relief materials, shelter, and emotional support to affected people.

Referring to the theme “United in Humanity,” he stated that humanity is a collective responsibility and encouraged people to contribute through blood donation, volunteering in community programmes, and spreading awareness on first aid and disaster preparedness.

“Be the help that starts with a simple act of kindness,” he said, while urging everyone to uphold the principles of neutrality, impartiality, and humanity.

Honorary Secretary of IRCS Kiphire branch, Tsointhe Sangtam, briefly highlighted the life and contributions of Henry Dunant. He recalled that after witnessing the suffering caused by the Battle of Solferino, Dunant initiated voluntary relief efforts that eventually led to the establishment of the International Committee of the Red Cross in 1863 and the first Geneva Convention in 1864.

He also spoke on the seven fundamental principles of the Red Cross movement — Humanity, Impartiality, Neutrality, Independence, Voluntary Service, Unity, and Universality — stating that these values guide humanitarian assistance worldwide.

Tsointhe informed that the Kiphire branch currently has 100 registered volunteers and continues to extend relief and aid during emergencies and accidents in the district.

Meanwhile, Sentiwapang delivered a brief awareness speech on road safety and traffic regulations.

The programme was chaired by Tsalichum S Sangtam, with invocation by Seroba, Youth Pastor KTBL. A welcome address was delivered by Tsointhe Sangtam, while a special song was presented by J/YRC, GHS Yangphi. The programme also included felicitation of Red Cross life members, and the vote of thanks was delivered by Thsaropi, Office Assistant, IRCS.
