Lok Sabha MP S. Supongmeren Jamir raised concerns under Rule 377 in the Lok Sabha, urging the Government of India to approve and prioritise the construction of the proposed Foothills Road (Trans–Nagaland Highway), informed a press release by the Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC).
The proposed Foothills Road, with an estimated length of about 395 km, will run along the foothills bordering Assam and will significantly reduce travel time between districts of Nagaland. The project aims to enable citizens to travel across the state without repeatedly crossing interstate boundaries, thereby improving connectivity and administrative accessibility.

Jamir urged the Government of India to give due consideration and expedite approval of the critical infrastructure project in the interest of the people of Nagaland and the overall development of the region. “The Foothills Road has long been a dream project for the people of Nagaland, and its implementation will mark a major step toward strengthening connectivity, economic progress, and regional integration in the state,” stated the press release.

Once completed, the road is expected to directly connect 103 towns and villages, benefiting more than 11 lakh people across the state. The highway will also link interior districts with National Highways and state roads, opening new avenues for economic growth, trade, and development.

The alignment of the Foothills Road will pass through several districts including Peren, Chümoukedima, Dimapur, Niuland, Wokha, Mokokchung, Longleng, and Mon, covering regions that are rich in natural and mineral resources and have long faced connectivity challenges.

The Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) for Phase-I (Package I–VI) covering 180.656 km from Dimapur to Tuli, with an estimated project cost of ₹3,284.06 crore, have already been submitted to the Minister for Road transport and Highways for consideration and approval as a National Highway. The estimated cost of the entire Foothills Road project is approximately ₹9,000 crore.
